7 Weird Things That Happen To Your Body During Puberty

Growing up, there was nothing I used to hate more than hearing that my feeling of being unattractive was just there because my body was changing, and that it would pass eventually. I just wanted to feel pretty right then! Was that too much to ask? When it comes to puberty, I guess so. Puberty is a confusing time in anyone’s life and can do some unholy, weird things to your body. It’s the last big growth spurt you’ll have, and it comes with lots of complicated hormones just in time for high school – when all you want to do is be cool. Thanks a lot, body.

So yes, your body is changing. Yes, it could suck, or it could be relatively harmless (I see you guys on Instagram, seriously, how do you look gorgeous and also thirteen? Weren’t those things mutually exclusive?). No, there’s not much you can do to make it go faster or go away and for sure, your body’s about to do some weird stuff. We all know that as you grow, your voice gets deeper, you may elect to start shaving, and you get your period… but there are some other strange things I wish someone told me about when I was going through puberty so I didn’t feel like such a gross weirdo. Here are seven weird af things your body does during puberty:

One Of Your Breasts Starts Growing Faster

It's normal for one breast to be bigger than the other, which means it's also normal for one breast to start developing before the other one. They may catch up with each other, they may not. It's okay if your boobs aren't exactly identical. Unless the growth in your breast area is hard, it's nothing to be concerned about. It may look or feel weird, but this is a perfectly normal part of puberty.

You'll Get Nervous Sweats

It used to be that you'd only sweat if you were running around, playing a sport, or it was super hot out. Now, thanks to hormones and feelings your sweat can get triggered by feeling nervous or any feeling had in excess. This sweat isn't like the sweat you had before, you now sweat a LOT. At least, a lot more than you may be used to. This is why you're going to want to start using a deodorant or anti-perspirant to get that under control and save you if you feel embarrassed about sweat.

You'll Get Discharge Before You Get Your Period

Please let me know if you also freaked out and had your mom run to your room when you first saw discharge. I knew about my period potentially coming, but no one told me about the pre-first period discharge. When your body is within 18 months of being ready to have your first period, you're going to have some typical white discharge. It may show up in your underwear and unless it's clumpy and thick (yeast infection) it's nothing to worry about. Stock up on some tampons and pads and wipe your undies clean.

You Start To Throw Tantrums Like A Baby

Let me be clear, your feelings as a teen are justified. People who wanted to dismiss me and blame it on hormones set me all the way off. However, the surge of feeling frustrated like you can't contain it in your body is not unlike the tantrums you used to throw as a toddler. Your prefrontal cortex is developing and that's where your impulse control lives. Take some deep breaths and leave the room if you have to. You're more mature than a toddler now and controlling a tantrum is well within your abilities even if it doesn't make the feeling go away at all.

It Might Take A While To Notice Pubes Or Underarm Hair

You don't suddenly get thick, coarse curly hair on your pubic area and armpits. There isn't one curly-q sprouting at first that's suddenly joined by it's friends and voila - hair! The hair starts out finer at first and will grow thicker, curlier, darker, and more abundant over time. You may awkwardly find a soft downy patch of hair under your arm and maybe not even want to shave it because the hair is that thin. The same thing goes for your pubic hair.

You Gain Weight

Going from a spindly child to a weird looking half-adult with hips is going to force you into buying new clothes. Finally being able to shop in the juniors section is thrilling, though! Your body doesn't grow up incrementally like your shoe size. A spontaneous growth of hips, butt, or breasts won't make you fill out your tee shirt in a sexy way, it may just make you get a whole new wardrobe of shirts altogether. And pants. And shoes. Your body won't grow in any predictable way either. You could grow hips without any butt to round out those proportions. While your relative weight gain may make you think you'd only need to go up one or two sizes, the way some clothes are cut may have something different to say.

You're Going To Look Older Than Boys

Boys hit their growth spurt later than girls, so if you're attracted to boys, get ready to be taller for a few years. Girls generally enter puberty before boys, so you may walk the halls of your school hand in hand with a cute boy... who still looks kind of boyish. They'll catch up between eighth grade and sophomore year of high school, but in the meantime, you may feel taller and more mature. It made me feel self conscious as hell, but knowing that it wouldn't always be the case was super comforting.
